Technical Difficulties

Just about every person I know who has a blog has a little blip on the side of their blog, usually to the right, that has links to the fabulous blogs they read. I don't read their blogs if I'm not on that list. However, I don't have one of those lists.

I'd like to say there's some impressive reason for that. I do actually feel like by listing blogs on your own personal blog, you're almost endorsing what that other person says...and what if they say something really stupid? This is almost guaranteed if I'm listed on your blog, by the way.

However, my failure to list other blog links is not at all that well intentioned. It is, sadly, lack of knowledge in how to make the list appear.

Seriously people, I once asked my boss what was wrong with my computer...and he asked me if it was on (it wasn't).

Recently, Blogger has decided I can no longer post pictures to my blog, and I can no longer bold words. I am 100% certain this is entirely my fault; however, I don't really care, because I'd like very much to be able to do both of these things.

I guess I'll have to do something I don't enjoy at all - I'm going to have to ask for help.

Here’s what you do to add such a list to your blog. I tried to really dumb it down so there would be no confusion (but not because I think you’re stupid or something.) :) Forgive me if I’m telling you something you already know:

1) Sign in to Blogger. This should take you to the Dashboard.

2) Inside the white rectangle on the Dashboard, where there is a little image of a gear and it says “Manage:” click on “Layout.”

3) On the Layout page, you should see a column of boxes on the side. (You might have “About Me,” “Blog Archive,” etc.) Look for a box in that column of boxes that says “Add a Page Element.” Click on that.

4) The “Choose a New Page Element” window should pop up. Look for the Element called “Link List” (2nd row from the top, right side). Click underneath “Link List” on the button that says “Add to Blog.”

5) A Window should pop up that says “Configure Link List.” Here’s how you fill out the boxes:
Title: (This is where you enter the title of the whole section. You might put “Blogs I Read” or “My Friends” or whatever.)
Number of links to show in list: (You don’t have to mess with this one. Just leave it blank.)
Sorting: (I would recommend choosing “Sort Alphabetically,” but you can do whatever you want.)
New Site URL: (Here is where you put the actual website of a blog you want on your list. Let’s say you want to add Larry’s blog. In this box it should say “http://coachsal.blogspot.com/”. They only let you add one link at a time.)
New Site Name: (This is how that link will actually show up in your list. For Larry’s, you could put “Coach Sal” or “The Professor” or “My Brother” or whatever you want.)

6) Once you have filled out the boxes for one link, click the “Add Link” button. Then you can fill out the “New Site URL” and “New Site Name” boxes for the next person. When you are finished adding links, click on “Save Changes.”

7) If you want to change this list later, you can just find that box in the column of boxes on your Layout page and click where it says “Edit.”

I hope that helps. :)

Oh, and if you are already signed in to Blogger, from your own blog page, you can click on the top where it says "Customize" and that will take you directly to the Layout page and you can proceed to step #3. (Actually, I should be more specific. You want the "Add and Arrange Page Elements" page under the "Layout" tab. If it doesn't take you there directly, under the "Layout" tab you click on the "Page Elements" link.)

Cool - thanks

Do you know how I can fix it so I can add pix - and bold my titles?

Another tip on adding the URLs to your list: Open another window of your web browser and go to the actual blog pages of your people so you can just copy (Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) the addresses from the tops of their pages into the "New Site URL" box. That way, you won't accidentally type them in wrong. That's how I did it anyway.

I'm not sure about the pictures... I don't know how you're trying to do it.

As for bolding your titles, there are several things you could do. The easiest way is just to actually type the title of each post into the box where it says "Title:" If, for some reason, you don't want to type into that box and just want to type your title in the big box with the rest of your post, obviously you can highlight it and click on the "b". If THAT doesn't work, click on the "Edit Html" tab. Find the title that you typed in. In front of it put "< b >" and after it put "< / b >" (except take out all of the spaces... when I tried to post it a minute ago without the spaces, it bolded everything in between them and the things themselves didn't show up) with no spaces between the thingies and the words of your title. BTW, this is also how you bold things when you leave someone a comment. If that doesn't work, I don't know what else to tell you.

What do you mean you can't use bold?

All this edu-ma-kashun and you still haven't added links to my blogs or to Scott's.

I guess it just doesn't pay to teach some people.
